DIY control desk

We created a customized lighting console in 2020 that operates any size of lighting setup using MagicQ software. Our objective was to make the console small enough to fit into a carry-on case but still offer a sufficient number of executors and faders.

The lighting desk utilizes ChamSys MagicQ, and a Rack Mount dongle provides access to MIDI, audio, and ArtNet IN capabilities. The case contains a mini PC with 4GB of RAM and a laptop stand to provide flexibility and a suitable angle for the control surface.

To control the first 10 playbacks of MagicQ, we incorporated a KORG nanoKONTROL2. Additionally, we programmed two custom pages of 64 executors into a Launchpad Mini MK3, and the third page was reserved for command buttons using macros, allowing easy programming from scratch.

The console’s monitor is a 13″ touchscreen mounted on a lightweight laptop stand for the ideal angle. Two USB hubs are also included, providing sufficient ports for adding an extra light or connecting USB drives when necessary.
